Question about ribbon color in the heydays of typewriter era.

Hi fellow Typospherians,

I have a question for you.  Aside from all-black, red/black ribbons, what colors were once used in the heydays of typewriter era? I've seen dark blue, verdant/ brown ribbons on a Remington shipped from the US.

In China, most typewriters would have black/red and all-black ribbons. I've seen, on earlier machines , blue ribbons. There were two shades of red. One is darker while the other is what I call rouge.

Your input will be highly valued and appreciated.

  1. Purple was a popular color, especially in the 19th century; it was good for some copying processes.

I have seen old brown, green, and blue/black ribbons.

A company today sells orange, pink, and other exotic colors.

    1. Thanks for replying. I've seen the company's postings on ebay. But honestly, those exotic color ribbons are not decent enough for me. The manufacturer seem to use a low-quality semi-transparent nylons and water-soluable ink. I assume that the color won't stay there long, even worse if water is accidentally splashed onto it. I prefer those old school oil-based ribbons, seems that the prints will stay there for good.

    2. Richard, from your blogspot, I learnt that you had recently published TYPEWRITER REVOLUTION. How can I get a copy? I've seen several offers on ebay, but I'm not sure which one is you! I want to buy directly from you!

    3. Thanks! I'm not selling it on eBay, but I have some copies at home. Shipping to China is expensive, of course, but write to me at polt@xavier.edu and we'll discuss.

  2. I have pulled old blue and old purple ribbons from machines. I have new blue and purple and even green ribbons on some of my typewriters just for fun. The blue I have is very bright, it would be nice to have a darker subtle blue like I have seen on some old ribbons...

    1. Thanks for replying. Yes, I also think dark-blue is a decent color for typewriter ribbons. I think one of us typospherians should consider start up a small business producing old school typewriter ribbons and sell it to the rest of us!
